Grounding: How Walking Barefoot on Grass Can Boost Your Health.
Updated: Aug 31
Have you ever felt a sense of calm after walking barefoot on the grass? Discover the Health Benefits of Grounding. There's more to that feeling than just nostalgia for simpler childhood days—science suggests that making direct contact with the earth, a practice known as grounding or earthing, could have significant health benefits.
Grounding involves walking barefoot grass, soil, or sand, allowing your body to absorb the earth's natural energy. This seemingly simple action has been studied for its potential to reduce inflammation, boost the immune system, accelerate wound healing, and aid in the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.
Electrical Charges from the Earth Heal You
The concept hinges on the electrical charges from the earth. Our bodies accumulate positive charges over time due to modern lifestyles. Direct contact with the ground can help neutralize these charges, as the earth emits negative ions which have antioxidant effects. These ions are thought to combat free radicals, which are involved in inflammation, pain, and disease processes in the body.
Wide-ranging health benefits
Scientific studies have shown that grounding can influence various biological markers. For instance, grounding has been observed to decrease the levels of white blood cells and cytokines, which are associated with inflammation. This suggests a reduction in the inflammatory response, which can have wide-ranging health benefits, from improved sleep and pain management to less stress and a healthier immune system.
Give it a go
“Interested in trying grounding for yourself?.”
Kick off your shoes ( our feet spend too much time in them anyway!), step outside and spend some time walking or standing on the grass. It really works try it, I just step into my small patch of garden grass, or in my local park. Next time you're feeling stressed or under the weather, consider taking a barefoot stroll through your nearest green space—it might just be the health boost you need!
Here are some tips for you that may help you maintain a consistent grounding practice: Super easy.
1. Make It a Daily Ritual
Morning Grounding: Start your day with a few minutes of grounding. Step outside onto grass, soil, or sand right after you wake up.
Evening Wind-Down: Grounding in the evening can help you relax and release the stress of the day. Consider pairing it with deep breathing or a short meditation, very relaxing!
2. Incorporate Grounding into Your Exercise Routine
Yoga or Stretching Outdoors?: If you practice yoga or stretching, try it outside. I started attending a Sunday 7am yoga class in my neighbourhood, struggled to get out of bed! but the benefits have really made it worthwhile.
Barefoot Walks: Take a walk around your yard, garden, or a local park without shoes. This is an easy way to integrate grounding into your daily movement.
3. Connect with Nature During Breaks when you WFH
Lunch Break Grounding: Working from home, as I do, this really has saved my sanity some very hectic deadline days! Spend part of your lunch break outside, barefoot if possible.
4. Create a Grounding Space at Home for the colder days
Indoor Grounding Mats: Many are available, try this one when outdoor grounding isn’t always an option. The mats simulate the effects of standing on the earth, allowing you to practice grounding while working, reading, or relaxing - when it's freezing outside.
Garden or Balcony Space: If you have a garden or a balcony, create a small, peaceful area where you can practice grounding regularly.
5. Use Grounding as a Stress Relief Tool
Mindful Grounding: When you’re feeling stressed or anxious, take a few moments to step outside, breathe deeply, and connect with the earth. This can help lower stress levels and bring a sense of calm.
Grounding in Nature: Spending time in nature can amplify the effects of grounding. Whenever possible, seek out natural environments to enhance your practice.
